Hamilton’s 8B Civics class has been doing a lot of service work in partnership with an organization called Multiplying Good, Students in Action. In order to choose an issue to help, they voted on many different issues. They voted to work on the issue of Immigration in Chicago, specifically those seeking asylum. They started their project by emailing organizations and people about partnerships and advice. Then they started a winter clothing drive and partnered with Building Blocks and Bitter Pops to have people outside of Hamilton donate as well as people in the school. They’ve had guest speakers come in to help tell them about how to most effectively combat this issue. Their goal for their drive is 150 coats, 200 hats and scarves, and 200 pairs of gloves! Every day in class they bring their boxes up to sort the clothes by size. But where are they donating to? The students are donating to another elementary school to make sure their asylum-seeking students have warm clothing this winter. They also have an amazon wishlist to donate directly to others in need of warm clothing.
